Toolz Academy Summer Coding Programme: A Success Story
Osinachi, 16 and over six foot was not pleased with the decision taken by his parents for his summer – to learn Coding. He had plans – definite plans of going out with his friends, playing video games and basketball.
The SS3 student was sent to the Toolz Academy Summer Coding programme and after two weeks, Jesse is still awe-struck, after learning what codes could do and he even wanted to stay beyond the end of the classes.
Experts have reiterated over and over again the importance of coding and why kids have to start coding from a young age. They rightly posit that technology is the future, and coding is such a critical component and essential skill.
“I love games but I never [truly] believed they were made from codes or that I could make these games – I need to say sorry to mum and dad because at the beginning I was throwing tantrums,” Enemuoh said.
It is only wise that children are made to embrace coding at a young age, which informed Toolz Academy’s decision to create the summer coding programme for teens between ages of 11 and 16.
Though there was headache, tears and dropping out; in retrospect, the programme was a huge success without been modest.
The children were excited and participated in all exercises with generous enthusiasm. The parents were around on the last day to watch their children present their projects and talk about their websites. It was exhilarating to see the faces of the parents light up on seeing what their teens had achieved in two-week free classes.
The instructor, Michael Umoren expressed optimism that “with their newly acquired skills, they can go on to design bigger websites and mobile apps like Konga, Zowasel, Amazon, to mention a few.
“We are so excited about the success of the first batch and can’t wait to begin with the second set. It will only get better,” Umoren added.
The Summer Coding programme introduced the kids to programming using HTML5 and CSS3. Generally, they learnt and practiced the core of these technologies and also designed web pages with them.
With a seasoned instructor like Umoren, Head of Tech, Zowasel, the teens were able to code in an interactive and enabling environment.
Coffee breaks and interactive games made it all the more memorable to what seemed an ordeal at the beginning.
Some of the goals accomplished include the following:
- The teens were able to break problems into bits and offer logical solutions using the coding language.
- They gained analytical application of this knowledge to tackle day-to-day challenges.
More importantly, they now have a more adept understanding of how technology is shaping the world. There is an exponential rate of innovation that encourages teens to aspire to be like Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, Elon Musk, etc.
Olufunke Akinloye, the Chief Learning Officer for Toolz Academy said, “It is amazing how much these children have been able to learn in 10 days, the fact that they have utilized their holiday well is something they will be grateful to their parents for, for a long time.
“For more kids to have access to this amazing opportunity we are looking at partnering with schools and educational centers that want to expand the knowledge base of their wards,” Akinloye added.
The icing on the cake for Toolz Academy is that the seven alumni are currently working on their websites while the next batch starts on August 14, 2017.
